A one-on-one performance; a visitor must enter the space, cross through the scraps of denim to tell the rugmaker a memory they have of blue jeans. Everyone has one. Denim sourced from across the United States during COVID.

During the summer of 2019, I spent a week living in disguise as a straight man in my rural Missouri hometown. My sunglasses were spy cameras and I filmed my time there as Jeremy, living as the version of me that never came out. Concurrently, my long-term partner, AMAB, had started her physical transition and was three months into hormone therapy. My mother- my childhood bully- was also dying of tongue and lung cancer, and I had spent several weeks of the summer caring for her. A year later, my partner left me, my mother didn’t die, and the pandemic struck. Lace Front Beard is this story.
