Character Development
In Fall 2018, I placed an ad in newspapers in a few small towns in the rust belt that had approximately the same population as my hometown in Missouri.
I received several responses to the ad. Eventually I was connected with a woman in Ohio. We immediately hit it off and began having 2-3 hour phone conversations for the next 3 months every few weeks. I recorded the conversations with her permission.
Over time I became obsessed with Diane. I never told her anything about myself, other than what was listed in the ad. Eventually, narratives from her life began to overlap with narratives from mine.
I wanted to know her more, so I traveled to a town near where she lives and walked in the stores she shops in, drove on the roads where she drives. I felt like I was haunting her. We’ve still never met.
